The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School indoor track and field wrapped up their second season with 10 runners competing in the division 5 state championship meet last Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center in Boston. The Vineyard girls team and boys team both finished 15th out of 41 teams at the competition, scoring 15 points apiece.

Coach Joe Schroeder said the result was especially impressive for a second-year team with four girls and 12 boys.

Two Vineyard athletes, Nevin Wallis and Livy Smith, also qualified for the All State finals.

Wallis placed second place in the 600 metre run with 1:24.17, setting a new school record. Smith placed second in the long jump with 17 feet, 0.5 inches and finished fifth in hurdles with 9.02. Both Smith and Nevin met the National Elite second team standard.

Several athletes scored points for the team by finishing in the top eight. Madison Moreis finished eighth in the girls high jump, setting a new school record. Tom Irwin placed sixth in the boys long jump, and the boys 4x200 metre relay of Caio Protti, Tom Irwin, Jake Janak, and Nevin Wallis finished seventh, setting a new school record.

In his final race, Nate D’Angelo broke his school record in the two mile, finishing 10th.
