Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School science students channeled Cupid for the February engineering challenge, creating mini bows and arrows to aim at a heart-shaped target.
Working in groups, students were tasked with constructing bows and arrows from plastic coast hangers, wooden skewers, cardboard, fishing line, tape and other basics. Each group had five tries to hit the pink heart target, with a between five and 50 points awarded for each hit.
The winning team with 110 points, consisted of James Kelliher, David Webster, and Brahmin Thurber-Carbone. Adam Bilodeau and Anders Nelson came in second with 105 points. In third place, with 40 points, was the team of David Packer, Nathaniel Packer, Auguste Pizzano, and Garrett Zeilinger.
The monthly engineering challenge gives students the opportunity to work in groups, experience first-hand the process of engineering, and an opportunity to compete as an academic team outside of the science fair.
