Vineyard youth from today and yesteryear have joined together for a new exhibit at Martha’s Vineyard Museum.

In February, 96 freshmen from the regional high school visited the museum for a tour of the archives. Each student chose a picture of children that spoke to them, and over the next six weeks the pictures served as inspiration for creative writing pieces.

The resulting work will be featured in the museum’s next Spotlight exhibit: Kids in the Archives — A Modern Perspective. The show will feature the top 20 pieces as chosen by teachers, alongside the photographic inspiration.

Museum education assistant Beth Seabourne had the idea for the exhibit after finding an archival photo of a rooster pulling a small child in a wagon. “There were quite a few of these oddly explainable pictures of Vineyard children, and together with education director Ann DuCharme, we decided we wanted to have fun with them,” Ms. Seabourne said in a press release.

The museum worked on the project with high school English teachers Kate Hennigan and Amy Reece.

There will be an opening reception at the museum on Tuesday, March 1 from 4 to 6 p.m., with free admission and everyone welcome. The exhibit will remain on display until April 30.
