Spring is now only one week away! No snow in sight. The weather has been warm all week. The daffodils are beginning to bud. Father Thyme, John Alley, reminds us that Daylight Saving time is this weekend.
This week at the Aquinnah Public Library, we are sad to hear that library director Olivia Larsen will be leaving. She will be greatly missed. She will continue with her positions at the Chilmark Library and the West Tisbury Library. The after-school program continues on Tuesdays at 4 p.m., story time is on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. On March 12, the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie will be presented and photographs taken with the mouse. Cookies will be available and make a mouse craft. On Tuesday, March 15 the Peanuts movie will be shown at 5 p.m. and pizza will be provided.
First Baptist Church will hold the annual St. Patrick’s dinner on Saturday, March 12 at 6 p.m. at the parish house, 66 William street in Tisbury. Traditional corned beef will be served along with Irish soda bread, potatoes, corn, carrots, dessert and beverages for $12 per person. Take out is available. The Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group will be celebrating Daffodil Day on March 17 with the annual sale of daffodil buds for $10 a bunch. All money provides many services for those in need on the Vineyard. The cancer support group meets every Wednesday at noon in the library at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center. You may purchase your daffodils at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital gift shop, down-Island Cronig’s, and Edgartown Stop & Shop.
Martha’s Vineyard Community Services is offering a new service for veterans by offering a discount card for a discount at local businesses. You may sign up at the Community Services campus in Building B, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Bill Stafursky, the veterans outreach coordinator. Vineyard businesses interested in participating may visit mvcommunityservices.com/veterans/idcard. This is a small way in which to recognize and thank those who have and are serving our nation.
Molly Purves and her fellow staff members at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival have been busy in preparation for the 16th annual festival at the Chilmark Community Center which gets underway on March 17 and runs through March 20. There will be a screening of a short film about Aquinnah residents Noli and Isaac Taylor in the Vineyard shorts program.
Congratulations and all the best to Jesse Burton and Evan Lavigne who will be among the graduates Friday at the Plymouth Police Academy. Jesse, the son of Sue Burton of Chilmark, will become a full-time member of the Chilmark Police Department. Evan formerly served in the U.S. Coast Guard at Station Menemsha and he will become a full-time member of the Taunton Police Department. Their graduation ceremony will be attended by Joseph Queen and others from the Vineyard.
Rumor has it that Captain Rick Lee, formerly of the M/V Notaposh, will be on the Vineyard for the week from his home in Florida. Rick is looking forward to once again spending his summer in Aquinnah and we look forward to his return when the weather is warmer.
Many thanks to the Aquinnah and Chilmark fire and police departments, West Tisbury Fire Department, Edgartown Fire Department and Tri-Town Ambulance for their concerted efforts in saving the Oberg home on Towhee Lane on March 3. There were no injuries and everyone was safe.
Solon Oliver, an eighth grade student at West Tisbury School, is this years Chilmark Service Ambassador for Project 351, which is a youth service organization that brings one eighth grader from every city and town in Massachusetts to “unite, act and lead” through service throughout the year. Solon is leading a clothing drive for his spring service to benefit Cradles to Crayons, a nonprofit organization that provides low-income and homeless children with everyday essentials. He will be collecting new or like new clothing from infant to adult medium and shoes from infant to adult size 10. Boxes will be available at the West Tisbury School from March 28 through April 4.
Condolences to the family and friends of Florence Flanders who passed away at Windemere this week. She was a much admired teacher at Tisbury School. Over the years she taught many of the students from Gay Head, our dad James Manning being one of them that she remembered so fondly. Services were held on Wednesday at Abel’s Hill Cemetery.
Condolences to the family and friends of Robert Mackay, who passed away at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Feb. 29. Mr. Mackay as he was known, was a favorite and we would see each other often as his daughters worked in the same wing. He will be missed for his strong sense of community in his new country.
Condolences to the family and friends of Judith McIntosh, who passed away at home surrounded by the love of her children and grandchildren. Judy will be missed as we would always be at the fair at her daughter Gwen Nichols’s booth, or out with her daughter Candy Nichols but more often than not just to sit and talk. Services were held on Sunday, with her son John Nichols Jr. arriving from Hong Kong and her son Wayne Nichols arriving from St. Croix.
Condolences to the family and friends of Deborah Pigeon, who passed away at her home in West Tisbury. Deborah was a favorite psychologist on the Vineyard, in private practice after being a member of the staff at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital during the days of Valley Associates. She touched many lives in her years caring for so many.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Waldron M. Sennott who passed away at his Towson, Md. home on March 3. He would have been 107 on March 31. He is survived by his devoted wife of 78 years ,Adelaide. He is survived by their son James as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Upon graduating from Harvard Medical School in 1937, he accepted an internship with the U.S. Public Health Service on Staten Island. His career and knowledge as a radiologist made it possible for him to work in many hospitals, eventually working in Washington, D.C. In 1947 Dr. Sennott and his wife built their summer home in Aquinnah where they spent many enjoyable summer vacations with their family. They were ardent supporters and attendees of Community Baptist Church of Gay Head. Services will be held on March 12 in Towson.

Rodeo Purves Langer will be nine years old on March 16. Michael Stutz, Taylor Ives, and John Floros celebrate on the 16th. Natalie Francis will observe a major milestone on March 16. Gabriel Olsen will be five years old on March 17.
