The Edgartown post office was closed for a short time Friday morning because of minor flooding related to construction.

Visitors to the post office early Friday were greeted with a hand-written note posted on the front door saying the facility would be closed until further notice because of water damage and that customers could get packages at the loading dock in the back of the building.

A construction project is underway to build apartments on the second floor of the building that houses the post office.

An issue with the cover on the building caused some rain water to seep in to the post office over night, U.S. Post Office spokesman Steve Doherty told the Gazette by email. Because of minor flooding in the lobby, the post office decided to restrict customer access out of an abundance of caution, he said, and electrical service to the front of the building was shut off.

“Our employees acted quickly this morning to insure that there would be no impact to mail belonging to the 3,000 post office box holders who use this office,” Mr. Doherty said. “The retail and post office box lobbies were reopened at approximately 10:45 [Friday morning].”

Mr. Doherty said contractors visited the site Friday to assess the water damage and additional repairs were yet to be determined.
