June Manning wants us to know that our Martha’s Vineyard Community Services needs some volunteers for two special projects this month. Offshore Ale is holding a Dine to Donate evening on Thursday, March 24. Your ticket will get you in to enjoy fine food and provide a donation for MVCS. We need a few people to be greeters, sell raffle tickets, work our information table, that kind of help. The other date we need volunteers is Saturday, April 9 at the annual health fair at our hospital. Again, greeters are wanted, people to hand out giveaways, and some to explain our organization. Please contact jrogers@mvcommunityservices.com if you can help out.
Carol at First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven sent out the Easter schedule. Join them at the corner of William street for 11 a.m. Palm Sunday service on March 20. A beautiful way to spend our first spring day. Good Friday services will be at noon on March 25 at the church.
Fred Hotchkiss informed me that five rotating educational poster presentations will be at five of our Island libraries. The posters describe research, monitoring, conservation and restoration projects occurring on Martha’s Vineyard. Fred thanks the leadership and community focus of BiodiversityWorks and the terrific input of director and wildlife biologist Luanne Johnson. If you have any questions or input call Fred at 508-693-3122.
Confidential to Lyn K: as you probably noticed with my spotty performance as a columnist and the depth of my grief over my BEST GIRL’S passing, I have not been able to read lately. Holly Towles to the rescue! Holly knows that my mom, Nonna, and I are great readers. She sent two books to us last week. Thank you, Holly. I am starting The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion today. I’ll keep you posted.
I forgot to mention something very important to me in my column and obituary for Theresa Lynn Praskach. I add it now: Teri was a member of Gilda’s Club of Westchester. Teri did not have cancer but joined in solidarity with me. We had a wonderful time attending talks, parties, crafts sessions and the open studio drawing and art projects on Friday afternoons. As usual, when a potluck event was on, Teri made a dish to please everyone. There are 52 Gilda’s Clubs, one in each of 50 states, one in Tokyo and one in Paris. You may join regardless of gender. You may join because you are related to or friends with someone affected by this illness; children, parents, cousins, all are welcome. Teri and I were particularly entranced by the room labeled NuggieLand, set up for the young ones, at our facility.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Chris Kennedy, John Franzago and Zachary Lawrence Donald Friday. March 20 shines on JD Wild, Deb Chickering, Dianne Norton, Seth Edwin Donald and Chuck Redington. March 21 is a party for Barbara Dacey, Julie Robinson, Maureen Whiting and Michelle Yates. March 22 honors Annette Anthony, Gabriel Nascimento and Elizabeth Bennett. March 23 is for Allison Crews, Louise Tierney and Casey Elizabeth Hendrickson. And on March 24, Corbyn Clark-Garza, Babette Benoit and beautiful twins Ellie and Greta Hehre take the cake. Many happy returns.
