Tisbury selectmen have appointed Ray Tattersall as the town’s new Department of Public Works director.

Mr. Tattersall was promoted from within the DPW and is taking over for interim director Paul Wohler.

“Its nice to see someone from within the ranks move up,” town administrator John (Jay) Grande said at a selectmen’s meeting last week.

Mr. Tattersall, who attended the meeting, thanked the selectmen for the opportunity and said communication is key to running the DPW.

“My main goal is to give the townspeople some quality professional work, and great service,” he said. “We need to step up our game, and I think we can do that with the people we have. It’s a good group of people who work there.”

Mr. Tattersall is the first director appointed since the selectmen took control of the DPW last year. The department had previously operated independently under the supervision of elected commissioners; last fall new legislation placed the DPW under control of the board of selectmen.

“The DPW and you and your goals have our full support and we will do what it takes to help you be successful,” said selectman Melinda Loberg.

Mr. Tattersall will serve until June 30, when he will be reviewed for reappointment.

The selectmen also welcomed Jessica Burgoyne, the new executive assistant to the town administrator. She will be replacing Aase Jones, who retired in January.

They also thanked Michael Gately for 30 years of service as a Tisbury police officer.
