With five annual town elections coming up next month, a noticeable dearth of contests is the Islandwide theme this year.

Elections will be held in five of the six Vineyard towns in April. Aquinnah holds its election in May. The deadline for filing nomination papers in Chilmark, Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury and West Tisbury closed late last month and early this month.

In Chilmark the lone contest this year is for library trustee; Carol (Candy) Shweder and Zoe Thompson are in a race for a seat on the library board. Jim Malkin is seeking his first bid to be a town selectman after incumbent selectman Jonathan Mayhew decided not to run again. All other elected posts are uncontested. The annual town election is April 27.

In Edgartown there is also a race for library trustee, with three candidates running for two seats: Olga M. Church, Stephen W. Miller and Justine Shemeth DeOliveira. Michael Donaroma is seeking a fifth term as a town selectman with no opponent. The election is April 14.

In Oak Bluffs there are races for cemetery commissioner, planning board and school committee. Christopher Gibson is challenging Linda M. Wilson for her seat on the cemetery commission. Erik R. Albert, Abraham L. Seiman and William B. Vrooman are all vying for a five-year seat on the town planning board, with Mr. Alpert running as the incumbent. Mr. Seiman is also challenging incumbent school committee member Lisa Anne Reagan for her seat. Gail Barmakian is running unopposed for a third term on the five-member board of selectmen. The annual town election is April 14.

In Tisbury there are no contests. Longtime selectman Tristan Israel will seek his eighth term in office. The town election is April 26.

In West Tisbury, incumbent selectman Cynthia Mitchell is running unopposed for a third term. Also a longtime selectman, Mrs. Mitchell previously served four terms from 1990 to 2002. There are no contests on the ballot. The town election is April 14.

Nomination papers can still be filed in Aquinnah for the May 11 annual town election; the deadline is April 6 according to the town website. As of this week there date there were no known contests. Selectman Spencer Booker will not seek reelection.
