Edgartown selectmen renewed licenses for three cab companies based in Edgartown Monday at their weekly meeting.

The town requires an annual public meeting with taxi owners. Adam Cab, Martha’s Vineyard Taxi, and Stagecoach Taxi operated without any significant problems last summer according to the police department, which regulates the companies.

“We had a great summer,” said Sgt. Joel DeRoche. “We have a good relationship with these companies. If problems pop up, we take care of them.”

In other business, attorney Sean Murphy appeared before the board representing the owners of Behind the Bookstore. The cafe off Main street sought guidance for a future application to change their alcohol license.

The owners plan to demolish a small addition behind Edgartown Books and use the space for outdoor seating for the cafe. The owners will need a hearing and a special permit from the zoning board of appeals. Mr. Murphy said the historic district commission has already approved the plans.

Selectmen would have to authorize any change in the premises that affects the alcohol license. Selectmen Margaret Serpa and Art Smadbeck said they had no objection to the preliminary plans.

Selectmen also granted two permits to temporarily block town sidewalks. On Wednesday March 30 and Thursday March 31 tree contractors will be working in front of the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank to remove stumps and plant a new tree.

The selectmen also granted Grove Management permission to block the sidewalk surrounding 3 Main street from April 4 to April 19.
