WYOB-FM, the Vineyard’s newest radio station broadcasting out of the regional high school, casts a mellow vibe. That makes sense for a reggae music station created for high school students to learn how to operate a professional radio station. Bill Narkiewicz from WMVY guides the students as does Skip Finley, a former impresario in the radio business.

The non-profit, non-commercial radio station went on air in October of 2015 at 105.5 FM and over time will become part of the high school’s career technical education program.

This Friday, to raise money for the station, there will be a benefit screening at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center of the classic reggae film The Harder They Come, featuring the sound track of Jimmy Cliff. The event is on April 1, the birthday of Mr. Cliff, and will also feature Island reggae band Island Thunder playing a live show after the movie, and Jamaican food prepared by Atria’s chef/owner Christian Thornton, along with some Red Stripe beer.

The film begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center 79 Beach Road, Vineyard Haven. Tickets are $30 per person and tax deductible, available at the film center or online at mvfilmsociety.com.
