West Tisbury police arrested a man wielding a 38-inch Samurai sword Monday evening at a home on Oak Knoll Road.

Jacob Bassett, 42, of Edgartown, was arrested without incident, police said.

Police were called to the residence at about 10 p.m.

“There was a male that had a Samurai sword that was out of control,” said Sgt. James Neville. “There was some type of fight at the house. The people that own the house left. It was pretty uneventful,” he said. “He came out of the house. We had enough people there to control him, and we placed him under arrest.”

Police will seek three charges, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct.

Sheriff Michael McCormack said Mr. Bassett was booked, jailed and later released on $500 bail. He is scheduled for arraignment this week. Mr. McCormack reported another brief incident at the jail.

“In the early morning hours, he threw some liquid that was in a cup at one of the corrections officers who was checking on him,” the sheriff said. “We are going to charge him with assault and battery on a corrections officer. We think it was water, but we’re not absolutely sure.”
