In her artist statement Maria Hurwitz describes her new collection Spring Altars in this way: “Our lives are made in the faltering and the striving. There are few stains in our animated world, meager proof of life or dirt or breath. Initially, it can be satisfying to be in such control but, at some point, I think we all crave something unavoidably visceral.”

What this means metaphorically is that through her art, Ms. Hurwitz aims to use the idea of the altar to remind viewers of the sacred in the everyday, and the preciousness of all things.

And what does this mean in a tangible sense? Well, see for yourself down at the Feldman Family Artspace at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center. Ms. Hurwitz's show is in residence in the film center lobby through May 2. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, April 17, from 6 to 7 p.m.
