Welcome to National Do Your Homework for the Government Day, and now this headache should subside for another year. In other civic news, Tisbury, West Tisbury and Edgartown did the right thing and passed the plastic bag ban at Tuesday night’s town meetings.
Nonna and I enjoy all of Ken Burns’s work, and we are glued to the Jackie Robinson series on PBS. Something came up in it Tuesday night. The Robinsons had trouble purchasing a new home as their family expanded. We all know why. They were invited by Carly Simon’s family to live with them until they could get settled. And so they did. I hear Carly’s first dream was to be a baseball player, not a singer. Great story. And my true team will always be the Brooklyn Dodgers, Da Bums!
I should have alerted you to contact the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center by Tuesday, April 12 to reserve a ticket for the community seder dinner at the center on Saturday, April 23. Oops! Caterer needs to know the count. I hope those who wanted to, got your seats to this popular annual event. Meanwhile, Rabbi Caryn Broitman begins teaching her Yiddish literature course on Sunday, April 17. Call 508-693-0745 or email the center as preregistration is required. The course continues through May 22. The book class is reading Homecoming at Twilight by Jacob Glatstein.
Our Farm Institute has a fabulous free event Saturay, April 16. Free admission from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Sheepapalooza. You will see the new baby lambs, watch sheep-shearing, learn about spinning, weaving, dyeing and knitting. There will be wagon rides. And, direct from our town to Katama, the Art Cliff Diner food truck will be on hand to make you happy. Spring has sprung.
Aidan and Olivia Gomez-Blanco, living in East Brunswick, N.J. when not at their grandparents’ Vineyard Haven home, take their new puppy Lolly to a local PetSmart for bath and trim. Last week the groomers thought Lolly behaved so well they could let her model some of their new nail stickers for dogs and featured her in their Look Book. I guess in dog years this is the equivalent of getting the cover for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. A rosy pink was carefully applied. Could television commercials be far behind? Those of you who follow me on Facebook know I chastise people who dress their dogs, cats, hedgehogs, birds and point out animals don’t like being personified. I fear one of these days they will rise up and kill us all for the silly hats and shirts we put on them. My first words to Lolly’s mom, Julia, were dogs don’t like to accessorize.
I have been taken, struck and shaken by the wonderful Inspirational Photography by Michael Blanchard. Michael splits his time between Maine and Martha’s Vineyard. His photography work is amazing. Michael will be coming out with a new calendar this summer, months running between September 2016 through December 2017. Mike has a goal of raising $15,000 on an annual basis from proceeds of the calendar and donating that to the New Paths Addiction Treatment Center at our Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. Called the Vineyard Serenity Calendar, Michael is committed to raising awareness about addiction all over. To pre-order visit blanchardphotomv.com. Good luck with a good idea.
Condolences to the family and friends of Jeffrey (Bubba) Wray who left us too soon.
Continued get well wishes to Lucille Clarone and Lew (Andy) Anderson. Also get well bouquets to Patches Kazlaukas.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Joe Ojile, Shirley Kennedy and Wendy Francis on April 15; April 16 is shared by Jenny Painter Seward and Evan Rogers; Irene Miller claims April 17; April 18 is a party for Laurie Jennings, Alexander Schultz and Lynn Whiting; April 19 shines on Eleanor Hebert and Bob Tankard; April 20 is BJ Kennedy’s Airplane Day; and on April 21 Judy Nichols and John Custer take the cake. Many happy returns.
