Emily Turney signed a letter of intent to play softball at Adelphi University on Long Island and Belle Dinning signed a letter of intent to play field hockey at Assumption College in Worcester.

With her family gathered around and friends filling the bleachers, Turney bent over her letter and signed.

“Don’t forget you’re signing your life away,” Coach Donald Herman said.

“I’m only signing four years away, Coach,” Turney replied. When she announced she had finished, her mother asked, “Did you dot your i’s?”

Turney has played on the high school softball varsity team since her freshman year and has been a division all-star for three years so far. She currently plays shortstop and is such a strong hitter that teams who know her won’t pitch to her, Mr. Herman said.

“In softball, that’s the best compliment,” he said.

Mr. Herman said it requires extra work to excel at softball on the Vineyard because of the isolated nature of the Island.

“This is just a reward for all the hard work and sacrifice she and her family have done,” he said. The Adelphi division II softball team is the 2015 East Region Champion.

Dinning was flanked by her mom and dad as she signed her letter of intent to Assumption College. She placed a Greyhounds hat on her head and smiled up at her cheering peers. Assumption’s field hockey is a division II team.

Coach Lisa Knight said she knew from the beginning that Dinning would excel.

“She’s the total package at this point,” she said. “She’s dedicated and she’s passionate.”

Dinning is the first student to sign to a college for field hockey in 16 years.

“She’s contagious to the field hockey program,” Ms. Knight said. “Her name will linger.”
