It may have been spring break for most of the students at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, but athletes on the sailing, boys lacrosse and baseball teams spent part of the week in intense competition.

The baseball team won its first championship trophy in the Russell E. Downes Westwood tournament this week. They beat Latin Academy 2-1 on Wednesday and followed Thursday with another win, 3-2 against Norwell, to clinch the championship. Jonas Lukowitz led the team to victory with a bases loaded single in the eighth inning.

The team’s record stands at 5-2. On Monday they will face Bourne at home at 3:15 p.m.

“We’re in good shape,” said coach Gary Simmons. “We’ve had really good starting pitching and we’re hitting just enough to keep us in there.”

In a quad meet on the Vineyard on Monday, the sailing team competed against Lincoln Sudbury, Barnstable and Sharon High School. The meet was tense, said coach Andrew Burr, as the Vineyard team lost the first two races, won the second two, and then lost in the deciding race.

All of the skippers on the team this year are new to varsity. On Saturday the team will race in the women’s New England championship qualifier in Duxbury. Mr. Burr said the team is working toward being ranked in the top 16 this year; they are currently ranked 24 with a 7-6 record.

Boys lacrosse faced off against Dennis-Yarmouth Tuesday at the high school, winning 8-5. On Thursday they traveled to Falmouth, losing to the Clippers 4-15. The boys team continues play on Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against Nauset at the high school. Their record stands at 4-3.

Other teams used the week off to recharge for the rest of the season.

The softball team is working toward two goal: making it to the playoffs and winning a league game, coach Donald Herman said. After the break they will resume practice over the weekend before facing off against Bourne next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Bourne. Their record is 2-3.

Boys tennis also took a hiatus this week. They are currently 4-1, having started the season with a 5-0 loss to Barnstable. But Coach Bob Rigali said they came back strong with co-captains Zak Danz and Connor Downing leading the team. “It’s almost like having two number ones,” the coach said. The boys face Coyle and Cassidy on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at home.

Girls tennis will also face Coyle & Cassidy, on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. They will play at the Lakeview Tennis Club. The girls are currently undefeated with a 4-0.

The team took a break during school vacation week and will be back at practice on Sunday to recharge for the rest of the season, coach Nina Bramhall said.

With a 3-2 record, the girls lacrosse team is focusing on stamina.

“I think the season is going really great,” said coach Kurstin Moore. “We’re focusing on conditioning to be a better second-half team, so we can play both halves with the same intensity.”

The track team has a 0-1 record, losing their first match against Brockton. They face Coyle Cassidy at Taunton High School on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
