The sun is out the trees are sprouting their leaves and the flowers are starting to grow. Now if the wind would cooperate it would be great.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Ruby Della Russo and Connor McGrath who celebrated their day May 7; Jahzarah McIntosh and Larissa Oliveira, May 8; Harrison Lazarus, May 9; Alexandre Guerrero, May 10; and to Avelly Otoni, who celebrates his day May 13.

It was a busy weekend with Pink and Green and Mother’s Day. Lots of people around, and lots of our summer residents down to open up their houses and catch up with their Island friends.

With the weather starting to be nice it is the same argument we have every year with the planting of flowers. People are so ready to plant and have their gardens looking nice, but it is too early for some annuals.

The last day of freezing weather is supposed to be May 15, and, as it is every year, May 30 for frost, even though there are some years that it is not true. So, if you are a gambler and want to plant now you can, but there is no guarantee that it is okay.

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren meeting is on Saturday, May 14, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Matha’s Vineyard Family Center. Grandparents who find themselves raising their grandchildren don’t have to go it alone. The family center, in collaboration with the Island Wide Youth Collaborative, offers up information about trends and issues facing grandparents raising grandchildren. Preregistration for this group is required. Please call 508-687-9182.

And electronics disposal day is set for May 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at community services. Fees are between $2 and $30 per item. Ten per cent discount for full car loads. All proceeds benefit Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. For more information, call 508-693-7900, ext. 267, or email jrogers@mvcommunityservices.com.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
