Friday is the 13th, so sprinkle a little salt over your left shoulder for good luck. Last weekend won’t soon be forgotten, it sprinkled at first then got much better. Many a dad took mom out to brunch and when they got back home he worked on chores she wanted done around the house.

All of us Sam, Anna and I traveled up to visit Nicole and observe Mother’s Day. Sam and I took Robbie and Henry and their other grandmother Aieda for a pedal-boat ride in Boston Common and we all ate brunch in a Boston restaurant.

On a personal note, old friend Sal Laterra passed away last week. Everyone in my family was shocked to hear the news. We attended his 90th birthday celebration a week earlier. I don’t remember what year Phyllis introduced him to the Vineyard, it had to be about 15 years ago. He made scores of friends in town and on the Island. After meeting him, you felt he was an old friend. He helped with projects and constantly kept up with news in our family. He helped my wife Anna and me with painting adventures, gardening and cleaning up or tossing out unnecessary junk. Above all, he was loyal to Phyllis and enjoyed traveling with her, taking tons of photographs, caring for her property and watching over her. Needless to say, he will be missed by all of us.

Don and Marcia Klepper-Smith, of Old County Road, report that they spent some time in Florida this winter with their granddaughter, Brynn, who turned three on May 4. Marcia has been tending to her garden of butterfly bushes, lady slippers, and wild flowers, while Don has been digging clams in a very cold Tashmoo pond.

Janet Newton reports that music director David Rhoderick will perform music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven in concert Sunday at 4 p.m. over at the congregational church. Featured works are Bach’s Partita No. 6 in E and Beethoven’s Waldstein Piano Sonata. Mr. Rhoderick will be joined by pianist Adele Dreyer and violinist Cesar Atzic Marquez for Dvoák’s Violin Sonatina. A $15 suggested donation will benefit the church and its music programs. An artists’ reception will follow immediately after the performance. For more details call 508-693-2842.

On Saturday the Martha’s Vineyard Democratic Council will meet at the Howes House from 9 until 10:30 a.m. They will have a full agenda, including Democratic candidates for Dukes County Sheriff Robert Ogden and Marc Rivers.

Amy Hoff, over at the library, reports that this will be a busy week for them. Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. Judy Kranz will offer a free pilates class and demonstration at the library. Judy moved full-time to the Vineyard five years ago and has her own studio, Island Pilates, in Oak Bluffs. Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. Choro das Tres will perform a family-friendly concert at the library. They are a Brazilian instrumental group of three sisters and their father. This is a free performance made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Library and the West Tisbury Library Foundation.

A history note from May 10, 1975: Tom Thatcher, of State Road, owned a proper bird feeder, visited by proper birds, but the feathered friend that consumed the most food never went near it. It was a seagull that buzzed his house looking for handouts for the past five years. It always sat on the chimney because, Tom believed, it liked to keep its tail warm. He preferred table scraps and was totally uninterested in bird food. If the scraps were not forthcoming, it squawked loudly from a nearby roof until fed. Tom named the bird Charles Henry 3rd. He felt that the numeral added a certain dignity to the name.
