Chilmark is on the downhill side of May already and still we shiver a bit. Only us humans are complaining. The birds are hatching, the leaves are unfurling and the fish are here. Our yellow flowers are faded now and the white blooms claim the landscape, shad, dogwood and more, daisies will be along soon. All we need is a sweater to enjoy it all. Anticipate that by the time you read this the temperatures will be more seasonable.

The Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust met at the town hall this week and David Bidwell of the University of Rhode Island was their guest. He is an assistant professor in the department of marine affairs at URI and told the committee about the Muskeget Channel Tidal Project, which has the goal of using tidal energy for the public good. Studies are underway and results are in from over eight years of work on the project; it is clear that tidal energy is an attractive source of power for the state. The Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative of New England, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to developing marine renewable energy in New England. The committee listened to Mr. Bidwell and were interested and eager to learn more as they formulated their questions and concerns about the effect that underwater turbines will have on the fisheries industry. We will hear more about this project as it moves ahead. I am sure you can Google MRECo for details.

We send condolences to the friends and family of Elliot Lehman, who died on May 5 at his home in Wilmette, Ill. at the age of 97. He enjoyed a successful career in business and was a dedicated civic leader for many of those years. He and his extended family have enjoyed their summers in Chilmark and have made many friends in the 49 summers he spent in Chilmark. All who knew and enjoyed his friendship will miss him.
