May 15 was the last day of freeze threats, so the weather people say. But we are still feeling a little cold affect. Now the wind is still blowing but the weekend is promising high temperatures. One can only hope.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Russell Coogan and Roa Sanchez, who celebrated their day May 14; Rhanna Deoliveira, Joseph Medeiros and Joao Nunes, May, 16; Pedro Alves, May 18; and to Amelia Craig, Jonas DeOliveira and Lucas Fenske, who all celebrate their day Friday May 20.

People are starting to arrive. Pat Rodgers and her husband John are here. We love seeing and talking to her.

Sometimes working has some nostalgic times. Steve Spear was in and we didn’t know him at first but as the conversation went on and he said he was from the Island and his mother lived here, we found out his mother was Claire Spear. Patty was in the shed and said she was a Leighton and Claire and her Aunt Shirley were the best of friends. It is a small Island.

After thinking about Claire and Shirley, I started thinking when Beth Erickson and I use to walk every morning or some afternoons ans we would run into Arlene Colter and Rosalie Bassett walking. We would comment on how we hoped to still be walking just as they were at their age. Memories are what keep us going.

On Saturday, May 28 take your pails, family and friends to the lawn of the Edgartown Library. They will be collecting pebbles from the lawn that is unmowable because of the pebbles. This event will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and prizes will be awarded for the most pebbles collected along with free ice cream for all.

In honor of Armed Forces Day, Saturday May 21, the Oak Bluffs Library will host an afternoon event to recognize veterans and celebrate their service to our country. This is an opportunity for the community to acknowledge the value of our veterans.

This year the library invited three local authors to discuss their book, Martha’s Vineyard in World War II. Tom Dresser, Herb Foster and Jay Schofield will talk about the role the Vineyard played during the war, including construction of the airport, practice bombing runs off South Beach and the use of ferryboats in the D-Day invasion.

The Armed Forces Day event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs Library. It is open to the public and refreshments will be served. Veterans are encouraged to enjoy the camaraderie of one another.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
