Town officials are encouraged with the progress of repairs to the U.S. Post Office branch in Edgartown, though there is a chance it won’t be ready for postal customers by the June 1 target date.

The post office was badly damaged by storm water coming through the ceilings from a second-floor construction project and has been closed since early April.

“They hope to have the new floor down and the painting done by the end of the week,” town administrator Pamela Dolby said at the board of selectmen’s Monday meeting. “We may go beyond the date a little because they’re going to have to have time to move back. But it’s very encouraging.”

The post office has relocated to the old Carnegie library building on North Water street while repairs are completed at the Triangle branch.

Also Monday, selectmen got an update on a home at 39 Jernegan avenue which has been the subject of numerous complaints about trash, abandoned vehicles, and boats causing a hazard.

Building inspector Leonard Jason Jr. said the owner is now cooperating with town officials to clean up the property.

“So far, two boats are gone and one car,” Mr. Jason said. “A dumpster should arrive today.”

Neighbors who attended the selectmen’s meeting for the second week in a row said they were skeptical, but selectman Michael Donaroma asked for patience.

“We are finally getting some progress,” Mr. Donaroma said. “It sounds like the building inspector and the board of health are doing the best they can. The best thing we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope the momentum keeps going.”
