Memorial Day began on Martha’s Vineyard with rain, gray skies, and a drizzly forecast, sending the annual parade and ceremony indoors and cancelling the town picnic.

The ceremony was planned for t 10 a.m. at the Tisbury School. Refreshments will be offered at the American Legion Hall post 257 on Martin Road following the ceremony.

The guest speaker will be Coast Guard Station Menemsha Senior Chief Robert Riemer.

Early Monday the annual raising of the flags ceremony at Oak Grove Cemetery was cancelled because of the weather. The annual town picnic was cancelled.

Memorial Day observances began Friday on the Vineyard as students at Chilmark, Tisbury, and Edgartown Schools held annual March to the Sea ceremonies, culminating with flowers tossed in the water in honor of those lost at war.
