A plumbing failure will force the Newes of America pub in Edgartown to close until later this month while the owners make repairs on the historic building.

On Thursday, an aging pipe failed in the building, releasing a small amount of wastewater. The structure was built in 1754.

“We need to close the restaurant to accommodate plumbing repairs,” general manager Patrick Cabido said in a statement. “Given the special care with which work is undertaken in such an historic structure, we are currently evaluating the exact time frame needed. We anticipate reopening later this month.”

Edgartown health agent Matt Poole said most of the plumbing in the downtown pub dates to a time before the town had building codes or mandatory inspections.

The Newes is part of the Kelley House Hotel. A spokesman said the hotel was not be affected.
