Twenty teams of five golfers apiece turned out last weekend for the 22nd annual Children’s Benefit Golf Tournament at Farm Neck. The tournament is a major fundraiser for the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Cape and Islands. The tournament raises $35,000 annually for the organizations.

Boys & Girls Club president Joseph Forte played with members of high school golf team; group came in second place.

Taking first place with a score of 54.3 was the team of Nick Costello, Kyp Cooperrrider, Mike DeBettencourt, Scott Merrit, and Ben Dwane. The team consisting of Joseph Forte, Chris Mayhew, Kaitlyn Marchand, Mason Jeffers, and Jack Murray came in second with a score of 54.7. In third place, with a score of 55.7, was the shorthanded team of Ray LaPorte, Mike Cassidy, Trevor Scanlon and Jimmy Maseda.

The teams competed under cloudy skies, and with a chill in the air, to have their names engraved on the Joseph Robichau Winners Trophy and to take home contest prizes. The competitors were treated to a post-play luncheon prepared by the Farm Neck Cafe.

“Of all the years I have played in the tournament, this year was the most enjoyable for me,” Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club president Joseph Forte said in a press release. “I had the pleasure of playing alongside of four talented members of the high school golf team and had a great time.”

Peter Gillis was the recipient of the A. Donald McGrath Youngest Golfer Award, which is presented annual in member of Mr. McGrath, an avid golfer and supporter of Island youth.

The Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters said they thanked all the players and sponsors, especially major sponsors Farm Neck Golf Club, Martha’s Vineyard Insurance Agency, Edgartown National Bank, Barnstable Mutual Insurance Company, and Vineyard Vines.
