Chilmark is in welcoming mode as many of our regular summer residents are arriving and settling in. Everyone’s social calendars and work calendars are filling up too.

The theme of this week’s column could surely be visitors. The residents of Basin Road have been enjoying a visit from a bobwhite. He or she has been up and down the street posing for pictures and singing the signature song of bobwhites for several days. It was like a visit from the past as it has been a long time since quail were common visitors to Menemsha. Hopefully, the song was answered in kind.

Conrad and Jane Neumann have returned to their Menemsha home on Larsen Lane after a winter in Durham, N.C. Jane looks forward to participating in the annual Chilmark Flea Markets that begin at the end of the month on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Menemsha Harbor was host to the annual visit of the New Bedford Yacht Club. Twenty-two boats competed in a race from Padanaram to Menemsha.

John Furst and Amy Cody of Chilmark are happy to tell us of the wedding of their daughter Madeline to Alex Weiss at the Captain Flanders House on June 18. Madeline’s brother, Arlo, has come from San Francisco to be his sister’s man-of-honor. Alex’s parents, Suzie and Mike Weiss of Bethesda, Md., and his sisters and brother along with their spouses and children will join other family members and many friends for the joyous occasion. Madeline and Alex live in Baltimore, where Madeline works at Johns Hopkins as an RN and is studying to be a nurse practitioner. Alex is co-owner of Caledonia Spirits, a distillery based in Vermont. Cheers from us all!

Robert and Emma Shalhope have returned to Barn Again, their Menemsha home on D.H.’s Hill after wintering as usual in Norman, Okla.

The Chilmark Historical Commission invites us all to a coffee hour on the lawn of the Chilmark Town Hall on Thursday, June 16, from 11 a.m. to noon. There will be a dedication of the stone with plaque that will be placed in the stone wall on Middle Road designating the location of the first Chilmark Town Hall built in 1844. Doughnuts will accompany the coffee along with some chat about Chilmark history. All are welcome.

Menemsha was visited this week by the dive boat and submersible that is working on diving on the Andrea Doria wreck. The passenger liner sank in 1958 near our shores and diving at the site has been perilous for many. We wish this crew good luck. There are many underwater pictures of the wreck on Google but maybe there is still more to be learned.

Bob Conway, former Chilmark resident, sends word that he misses his Chilmark life and his many friends here. If you would like to drop Bob a line, his address is: 3201 Fellowship Rd., Basking Ridge, N.J. 07920. Bob was an active member of the Chilmark Community Church when he and his wife, the late Phyllis Conway, lived in town.
