This is the time of year that people come to town and say, “gee when I left Oak Bluffs the sun was shining bright.” And of course it is foggy and damp here. But I always like to think that when August comes and the heat is high we are always just a little cooler than the rest of the Island.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Wyatt Belisle who celebrated his day June 5; Allie Branca, Cassandra Silva and Lejaun Webb, who all celebrated June 8; and to Rose Levesque, who celebrates her day Friday June 10.

Happy anniversary to Allen and Judy Norton, who celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on June 7. Here is to many more years together.

There was a lot of talk on Facebook a few weeks ago about the kids swimming out to the ferries to dive for coins. We would be at Owen Park and the minute the kids (mostly boys) would see the ferry by the jetty they would swim out to the boat and ask the passengers for coins. People would toss the coins and the game was on as they dived down to get the coins. If they didn’t have pockets they would put them in their mouths (ewww).

Most of the kids made some good money and were able to get treats by the end of the day. I was never one of those kids as I am not a water fan but I loved watching them dive.

Felix Neck is holding a summer solstice celebration for all ages on Sunday, June 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. Celebrate the longest day of the year at Felix Neck with stories, a campfire, music and tasty treats in their old stone amphitheatre. Enjoy music from the Featherstone ukulele jammers as the community comes together at summer’s beginning and welcomes all that this season has to offer.

I like to keep this column upbeat but I have heard so many sirens this week that it sounds like a big city. Please take time to go slow to work, school, etc. It is better to be late than to get hurt or hurt someone else. The bikers are out and school is still in session. Let’s have a safe summer. Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
