First year MVRHS varsity tennis player Camilla Prata helped send the girls team to their second straight Division 3 state championship final with a big win at third singles on Monday afternoon at North Newton High School.
The entire squad swarmed Prata after the junior won both her singles sets to clinch a 4-1 victory over Lynnfield.
“I knew [Camilla] had the mental fortitude and that smart game to be on third singles and pull out the win, week after week,” said head coach Nina Bramhall.
Prata transferred to the regional high school from the Island public charter school this past year. She dominated her singles match 6-4, 6-1 shortly after the Vineyarders lost their second doubles match 4-6, 3-6.
“I know throughout the game I just made sure I was steady the entire time,” explained Prata after her match. The first-year varsity tennis player played calm and composed, feeding herself positive thoughts throughout a pressure filled second set following junior teammate Kat Robert’s first set loss 3-6.
Roberts crawled back from her first set defeat to win the second set 6-3, and then won her match by winning a tiebreaker 10-3 instead of a full set since the Vineyard had already clinched the match.
Freshman Kelly Klaren won her singles match 6-1, 6,0 while the south sectional champion doubles duo Victoria Scott and Lizzie Williamson won their first doubles match 6-2, 6-2.
The victory kept the team’s perfect season intact, extending their overall record to 20-0.
The team will play for back to back state championships on Wednesday, June 15, against Hopedale in a rematch of last year’s state final. The match begins at 2:30 p.m. at Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury.
