Well, it happened again. Some jerk managed to pull out all the emotions of disgust, disappointment and dread in us last weekend. Refer to them as jerks, which they are. The word terrorist suggests too much power.

We must get real gun laws in place. At this point, changing the legislation is more profitable than praying.

What I will miss most when I return in a few weeks, and I know this already, will be George Kilowatt Santos’s smile. George gave us 92 well-spent, much admired years. His contributions to the community were enormous. His presence up and down our Main street was a real gift to us everyday. Some say his nickname “Kilowatt” came because of his work at the electric company. Perhaps so, but I prefer to believe it referred to the amount of electricity in his smile. Sitting on the bench at Leslie’s won’t be the same without him. God bless his family and thanks for sharing him with us.

Our MVRHS graduates look so beautiful and are on their way to great schools and good jobs. While I do not have as much contact with the Tisbury School as I once did I must mention one new graduate in particular who has stolen my heart. When I had surgeries in Boston he came with his mom, Leide, and stayed overnight to ensure my mother’s safety. When my best girl Teri was sick in Montefiore Hospital he came to visit, scrubbed up, put on a gown, and spent several hours with us. Wise beyond his years, handsome beyond belief, I especially want to congratulate young Naromar DePaula, a truly modern kid with very old fashioned values. Way to go, Naromar.

A last minute reminder for those of you who don’t want to miss the annual Father’s Day barbecue at our First Baptist Church on William street. The party is tomorrow, Saturday, June 18. Tickets are $15 each, takeout is available. Why should dad cook on Father’s Day weekend?

Mary Korba reported on the meeting June 6 at the PAC center addressing our Island problem with opiates. Nearly 250 community members attended, over 35 questions were presented for review. A working group is currently reviewing and answering these questions. Results will be released to the community soon. For now, a complete list of Island support services can be found at the MV Community Forum Facebook page. If you need information, wish to participate in the working group or have something to offer please call Mary at 508-693-7900, extension 222 or contact her at mkorba@mvcommunityservices.com. We need to get this situation under control quickly.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Gina Jannace on June 17. June 18 is a party for Peg Jackson, Julio Bueno, Antoe Mitchell and Benjamin Eli Tichauar. June 20 is shared by Laura Kimball, Khalil Khalil and John O’Donnell, June 22 shines on Michelle Alton, Pam Bahal and Eric Pachico, and on June 23, Charley Wulshleger and Byron Kennedy take the cake. Many happy returns.
