The Chappaquiddick Island Association (CIA) usually holds the first of two summer meetings on the first Saturday of July. However, since that day is July 2 this year, the board has concluded that all things considered, waiting a week will be better. Therefore the first CIA meeting will be called to order on Saturday, July 9 at 9 a.m. at the Chappy Community Center, with coffee and pastries starting at 8:30. The founders of the association way back in 1952 must have gotten a good chuckle out of the initials CIA for what was at the time a casual neighborhood congregation. The second CIA meeting of this summer is scheduled for August 6.
The Slip Away farm stand will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vegetables this weekend include kale, chard, spring garlic, sugar snap peas, baby turnips, baby lettuce and baby field greens. As in previous years, Mermaid Farm Yogurt, Chilmark Coffee Company coffees and Grey Barn cheese are in plentiful supply. New this summer is Dirt Road Farm maple syrup. Lily Morris is supplying Bantam chicken eggs. Or, for those of us with big appetites, duck eggs are also for sale.
The Chappy Store is open for business daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with shelves full of all kinds of items that will save you a trip to town.
Chappy Community Center summer programs and activities begin next week. Chappy Book Club will discuss The Rainbow Comes and Goes by Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt on Thursday, June 30 from 10:30 to noon. Sailing and tai chi start on June 27. Tennis and yoga start on June 28. The Trustees of Reservations summer naturalist program starts July 1. Pilates starts July 6. Summer comes on fast. There is still time to get signed up. Log onto chappycommunitycenter.org for a complete listing of activities, plus all of the sign-up forms.
Ladies’ tea will be hosted by Sue Phinney and Ginny Murray on Friday, July 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. The first ice cream social is Wednesday, July 6 at 7 p.m. and then every two weeks. Lobster roll dinners will begin Wednesday, July 13 and then every two weeks. Remember to pre-order the day before by 1 p.m.
The annual CCC Fair will be on Saturday, July 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are needed to bake for the cakewalk and treats table. We need face painters and an impartial judge for the dog show.
The weekly Wednesday 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. farmers’ market/crafts fair on the porch will begin sometime in July. The annual book sale begins Monday, July 11 and ends the following Monday. You may drop off any clean, relevant books up to a week prior.
The Chappy Tennis Tournament will be held the weekend of July 30 and 31. Visit the CCC website for more information, registration and rules.
As always we want folks to be taking lots of photos for the CCC calendar contest. Deadline for submission is Friday, July 22. Voting runs from Monday, July 25 through Friday, August 5. See the CCC website for rules for submission. New advertisers are welcome for the 2017 calendar. Call Lynn at 508-627-8222.
The CCC Chamber Music Program has returned with two performances scheduled. July 30 hear a quintet from the Manhattan Chamber Players play Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. On August 13, hear the Omega Ensemble perform Arensky and Schubert. Ticket sales alone will not foot the bill for getting these musicians to Chappy. This program will require donors to step forward to support this program and to keep ticket prices affordable. You can get your name in the program by becoming a concert sponsor with a gift of just $100. $250 gets you rights to call yourself a festival patron. This will look real nice on your tax return. And if we can pry more than $250 out of your wallet you will be known around the island as a festival benefactor. That has a nice ring to it. When I see you at the ferry I will include that title in my greeting to you.
You can also help out big time by hosting a musician or musician couple in your home the night before the concert and the night of the concert. Let the CCC office know at 508-627-8222 if you are able to help out. This is a wonderful opportunity to get some culture without even leaving Chappy.
