The angels were bowling on Tuesday morning and woke everyone with some greatly needed rain. I am not a thunderstorm fan but was smiling at the thought of the change of weather. Let’s hope we can have more mornings of rain to fill the ponds that need some water along with the plants and trees.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Lauren Boyd who celebrated her day June 20; Asher Savva, June 21; Carlos Arellano and Isabelle Murphy, June 23; and to Nathan Kohler who celebrates his day today June 24.

Can you believe that July 4 is just a week and a half away. People are scurrying to get their gardens ready, the painters are getting things whiter in town, painting trim and fences the store are stocking up and we are preparing for all the traffic and waiting in lines.

My friend Ellen called me and asked if I wanted to go to Menemsha with her and her daughter Ella for Crabby Patties at Larsen’s. Of course my first thought was all the way up-Island? And then my second thought was why not.

So after feeding their ponies, we were off. As we drove up-Island the fields are all green, the Mill Pond was calm and I looked for the swans and geese that are usually in the road creating havoc but I guess they were all nestled down for the night. We came to the corner and I noticed it was brighter than normal and Ellen noticed some of the branches that hung across the road were gone. Alley’s was decked out with summer gear, the church was its bright white with rainbow flag on the door and the statues at the gallery were bright white waiting to be photographed and copied by the visitors, and the Agricultural Hall was quiet, but you know the weekend would be buzzing with people at the farmers’ market.

We continued up-Island and the beauty just kept increasing. Some of the old houses have been revamped, not in grand style as we see in town, but just new shingles or paint keeping with the charm of the area. The mountain laurel is blooming white along the road side and the stonewalls are protecting the farmland behind it.

The Chilmark church was buzzing while they sold their lobster rolls, and the road to Menemsha was bringing back a lot of memories of my parents’ favorite road trip.

We got to Menemsha and there were brave swimmers in the water, Larsen’s was busy selling dinners for the people getting ready to settle in and watch the sunset on the beach. Ella got her Crabby Patties, but Ellen and I went back to the Bite for oysters and scallops, then back home.

I didn’t know what I was going to write in this column this week. But after the ride up-Island there is so much to say about how lucky we are to live in such beauty that we sometimes take it for granted. It also reminded me why people love to come here. I know it is hard to share but we did learn about sharing in kindergarten.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
