A Blackstone man faces six charges of rape and five charges of indecent assault and battery on a person who is disabled, following an investigation by Edgartown police.

William M. Clasby, 51, was arrested on June 23 and arraigned in Edgartown district court later the same day. The court entered not guilty pleas on his behalf. The Hon. J. Thomas Kirkman set bail at $30,000, and Mr. Clasby was released from jail on June 27, according to Edgartown police. Conditions of bail include staying away from the alleged victim, and the alleged victim’s workplace.

The defendant delivers magazines to Island retailers from the mainland on a regular basis, police said. The alleged incidents began in October 2015, according to Edgartown police Det. Jonathan Searle, who led the three-week investigation.

Detective Searle said the victim, who has not been identified, was specifically targeted. He said he does not believe there is any further danger to the public.

Mr. Clasby formerly lived in Edgartown and was employed at the Edgartown house of correction as a cook from October 2012 to February 2014, Sheriff Michael McCormack confirmed. The sheriff said he was terminated from the job.

Mr. Clasby is due back in court on July 21 for a probable cause hearing.
