Chilmark’s waterfront is getting lots of attention this summer. This week we all enjoyed the sight of the Polynesian sailing vessel Hokule’a. She made an unscheduled overnight stop in Menemsha and was a lovely surprise sight for many who saw her. There was much more about this historic voyage in last week’s paper listing the activities and events planned for her visit to Vineyard Haven. I hope you all got to see the double hulled canoe that has been travelling for two years. Some members of the Wampanoag nation welcomed her in Native American style to Menemsha while she was here.

We send condolences to Elizabeth Day Churchill and her three children on the untimely death of her husband, John Churchill. He died on Sunday last at their home in California. Elizabeth is the daughter of Robert and Barbara Day of West Tisbury and the sister of Catha Day of Chilmark and New York city and Matthew and Tracy of Sarasota, Fla. There will more from the family in a future edition. We wish all who knew and loved John peace and courage. He will be missed by many both coasts.

Bill Vincent is vacationing at the family home on South Road this week. His daughter, Katie, her husband Nick Persons, and their twin daughters Natalie and Vivian are also here. They are all from Niskayuna, N.Y.

Cricket Farnsworth is enjoying her annual vacation to Chilmark and has as her guests this week Toby Arianna, Alexandra Kimball and their daughter Elizabeth of Norwalk, Conn.

Roz Glazer is welcoming her three children and their families for the annual Menemsha vacations. Aaron and Illana with daughter, Ziva, are coming from Los Angeles. Jacob and Dalia Glazer are coming from New York city with their children, Solomon and Leah. Hilary Glazer, also of New York city, will be here with her sons, Samuel and Isaac.

Ed and Susan Weber have returned to Union, Me. after a visit with Susan’s mother, Marjorie Phillips. Their children Owen and Anna joined them at their cottage on Larsen Lane for the week. Teri Young of Camden, Me. was their guest.

Jill and David Johnstone of Ashland enjoyed a week at their Larsen Lane cottage.

Bill and Betsy Ramsey of Wayland are at their Larsen Lane home and happy to be sharing time with their daughter, Karen Milioto, her husband Brad, and their young daughter, Ruth. The family comes from Louisiana. Ruth is named for her late great-grandmother, Ruth Hancock Gilmour, longtime resident of Larsen Lane.

The Coleman family is planning a big celebration next week. Bill will be arriving from North Carolina to join Julie and their daughter Chandra will come with her family. Julie’s sister Evelyn Kreyling will be here with her daughter Kristina and husband Chris. They will have their two-year-old daughter, Olivia Kristiana, baptized at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Sunday, July 3 after the 9 a.m. Mass. Also being baptized at the same time will be Chandra and Lawrence’s daughter Colette Aquinnah. The Colemans’ two other grandchildren, Lucas and Ella, will be in attendance. Cheers to all!

Chilmark Community Church is selling lobster rolls at the church from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays throughout the summer.

Nancy Aronie wants us to know that her first Chilmark Writing from the Heart workshop is July 4 to 7 from 9 a.m. to noon. All levels are welcome.

This week’s Wednesday program at the Chilmark library will be the Jim Thomas Spirituals Choir. They will present a program of U.S. slave songs, also known as Negro Spirituals, from approximately 1619 to 1865. Admission is free. The Friends of the Chilmark Public Library sponsor the program. For more information please call 508-645-3360.

And here is some food for thought this week…rumor has it that Menemsha will soon have trash cans that can email and also offer free Wi-Fi. Further research is necessary before I can move this from rumor to news but it is distracting me from worrying about the parking at Menemsha these days.
