Please Adopt Us The happy adoption story of the week is about a male Siamese cat mix whose new owners were at the shelter as he was being surrendered and fell madly in love. Sometimes the universe comes together to make that perfect match.

This week’s other new arrival is a long-haired tortoiseshell cat. She is seven years old and her name is Precious. She is still acclimating to life at the shelter but is slowly coming out of her shell. Please meet her and see if she could be the cat of your dreams, or even just visit to help with her ongoing socialization.

Kyra, our wonderful Native American shepherd dog, is coming along nicely with her training and socialization and is now ready for adoption. Gentle training will need to be continued but she is extremely intelligent. Kyra is a large girl and very beautiful, about 60 pounds give or take. Sweet as can be, yet still on the timid side, which is a characteristic of her breed. Please come meet this lovely lady and see if there’s a place for her in your heart. She needs a gentle, loving home.

Another dog available for adoption is Tempe. She is a seven-year-old black Labrador retriever/hound mix, good with both children and cats. Please contact the shelter if you would like to meet her so a meeting can be arranged. She will be staying with her family until a new home can be found.

Year-old calico mama Colleen is still being socialized and is warming up to people. She is now ready for adoption. Colleen would make an excellent barn cat. Her two kittens, Pounce the orange boy and Tennessee the tuxedo boy, are about nine weeks and ready to go to their new homes this week. And our other two kittens, Bonnie and Clyde, will be going to their forever homes this week as well.

The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard’s annual Garden Party was held on June 27 and was a huge success. The venue was spectacular and many thanks to Trip Barnes for conducting the auction. And a big, big thank you to all our donors and volunteers for making it the success that it was.

Now that summer is here the shelter would like to remind all pet owners how quickly temperatures rise in a closed vehicle. Please do not leave your pets in what can rapidly become a deadly situation.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.

Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations. Please make checks out to The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 1829, Edgartown, MA 02539 or visit animalshelterofmv.org.
