Every week during summer is a full one for the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, but next week two events have special significance, with seasonal Island residents screening and discussing their new projects.

On Tuesday, July 12, beginning at 8 p.m. at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs, professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (and MVFF board member) takes audiences behind the scenes of his documentary series Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise which examines the last five decades of African-American history.

On Wednesday evening, July 13, at the Chilmark Community Center the evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with kids activities and films at Cinema Circus, followed by an 8 p.m. screening of Custody directed by James Lapine. The Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer/director will be on hand to talk about the movie, which stars Viola Davis and Tony Shalhoub. The movie tells the story of a single mother in a custody battle for her children after her son’s teacher reports a suspicious injury.

The Mangku Food Truck will on site at the community center to keep stomachs from growling.
