Chilmark seems like the best place to be this week! A lot of people seem to think so and we are happy that the weather for the most part is keeping everyone in summer mode. It is hard not to talk about the politics of the moment but I will do so.

The harbor is full of boats, the beaches are crowded with swimmers and sunbathers and the roads are busy with people trying to get to the shore or home again. So far all seems familiar. And have you noticed that we greet each other with ‘Did you see that?’ As if we hadn’t seen it all by now!

Remember to save August 4 for Meet The Fleet day in Menemsha. It will be between 5 and 7 p.m. at the dock and feature all things fishing. Should be a fun time for all.

Jonathan Neumann is here from Portland, Ore. for a summer visit with his parents, Conrad and Jane Neumann. His family will join him soon.

Doug and Carol Whittier of Winthrop, Me. are at their Larsen Lane home for their annual visit. Their son, Jonathan, and his daughter, Sienna, have come from Tucson, Ariz. to join them at the cottage.

We are happy to report that Marjorie Phillips is at home on Larsen Lane and happy to have her son, Chip, and family visiting from Lexington, Va.

The Martha’s Vineyard Author Series continues at the Chilmark Community Center. Matthew Desmond will discuss his book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, on Sunday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Richard Russo will discuss his new novel, Everybody’s Fool, on Thursday, July 28, at 7:30 p.m. Please find details at mvbookfestival.com.

The Chilmark Library invites us to see a mixed media show by artist Jane Foster Thame of West Tisbury and Sarasota, Fla. She constructs masks inspired by African tribal masks. The show will be on display from July 16 to August 5 and the artist’s reception will be on July 23 from 3 to 5 p.m. All are welcome at no cost. The show may be seen during the library’s regular hours.

The Chilmark library will host a visit from storybook characters Elephant and Piggie, created by Mo Willems. They will visit during the Saturday morning Stories and Songs hour on July 23. Everyone is welcome at no charge.

The Wednesday afternoon program at the library on Wednesday, July 27 at 5 p.m. will be a talk by Chilmark shellfish constable Isaiah Scheffer. His subject will be eelgrass, which is important for the overall health of the coastal ponds. The town of Chilmark and Constable Scheffer are conducting an experimental program that will, hopefully, restore eelgrass to Nashaquitsa Pond. Admission is free and the Friends of the Chilmark Public library sponsor the program.

Have you figured out what the Pokemon craze is all about? I haven’t but I know that the Chilmark library is very up to date and can answer your questions on the subject.

The Chilmark Community Center is up to speed with many programs planned and happening. Drop in for a schedule or call 508-645-9484 for details.

This will have to be it for this week. My view of the world is limited to Basin Road these days so I depend on the rest of you to call or email me with news . . . there is still lots of summer to come!
