The weekend weather was delightful and reminded me of summer. There were many yards sales held all around town. A lot of backyard barbecuing was held and it was wonderful. Business people report that there have been a lot of people around and the traffic nearly impossible at times. The weatherman tells us that we are on pace for one of the warmest Julys on record.

Charlie Kernick and his wife Stevie of Edgartown Road returned home on Wednesday after a 10-day motor trip along the Maine sea coast. Judging from their Facebook posts they had a wonderful time.

Sig Van Raan reports that his play reading at Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse was an overwhelming success and was sold out. Professional actors from New York as well as nine-year-old Dillon Fondren from Oak Bluffs read the entire script, which was based on true events from his family during the Nazi occupation of Holland. Now comes the hard work of marketing it for production

His wife Susan’s old friend Carol Hymowitz from New York and Sig’s daughter, Sofia, came in for the play reading. Susan’s older sister, Jane Lebow, visited from New York this past weekend. Susan is off to New York this week to oversee renovations of their new apartment in NYC. Sig is staying put, recuperating from a lower back strain, which limits his softball activities to umpiring, yard work and writing a check to the landscaper. If anybody wants to pick some rhubarb, you are most welcome, as they have more than they can ever use.

Holly Eger gave a swell talk about her new novel Split Rock at the library last week. She pointed out all of the twists and turns writing her novel presented. One book store has called it the sleeper hit of the summer. Her problem now is keeping them supplied with the novel.

Try to stop by Saturday between 5 and 7 p.m. for the opening of Jack Ryan’s show at Art Space located near Middletown Mowers and three stone throws away from the post office. One of his friends, Mike Mok, will be playing live music for the event.

Sara Rosenthal is staying through the summer at her house on Lambert’s Cove Road, in part to run her partner Julie’s studio/shop at their place at 562 Lambert’s Cove Road. Julie is an artist who does both monoprints and works of glass fusion. Many of her monoprints contain local Vineyard flora and other items which have been pressed into the prints. Sara would love to see you and show you Julie’s work. Hours are Friday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment, call 508-693-1462.

Paul Levine presented the seventh annual Troubadour and Trobairitz production of poems, songs and music from 12th and 13th century southern France. One of the professionals that sang was Shannon Rose McAuliffe, who lived in town for several years and graduated from the regional high school.

Peggy Stone, over at the parks and recreation committee, reports that the basketball camp at the West Tisbury courts is in full swing. There is still space available. Grades 1 through 4 takes place Tuesday and Thursday; grades five through eight on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all from 9 a.m. to noon.
