On Monday, Aug. 1, at 7:30 p.m. the Film Center in Vineyard Haven screens the documentary Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures. The movie is an in-depth look at the life and work of legendary, and controversial, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Do yourself a favor and read Just Kids by Patti Smith to get a feel for who the artist was as a young man just starting out, before the backlash.

The director Randy Barbato will attend the screening and participate in a Q&A afterwards.
