First, a reminder that the Chappy Community Center annual meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 6 at 9 a.m. at the center. The CCC is the heart of Chappy life. New officers are elected at this annual meeting. This will be a great opportunity to connect with the board of directors, show our support, learn about the many building improvement and maintenance projects, and to share our thoughts and ideas about the activities and programs that the CCC sponsors.
The world-renowned ninth annual all-Island Chappypong Table Tennis Tournament, sponsored by the community center and Martha’s Vineyard Table Tennis Club, will be held Sunday August, 7. The event is open to players of all ages and skill levels. No fees are charged for entrants and prizes will be awarded to winners. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the community center with play to start at 11 a.m. The competition is organized in a round robin format, with all entrants guaranteed at least three matches. Playing equipment, tables and scoring management will be provided by table tennis club members. Tables and paddles are available daily outside on the east porch of the community center for players who want to practice for the tournament. The community center is a very lively place these days. Check the chalkboard on the porch, the website and the bulletin board at the ferry for up-to-date information about activities and events. Some of the activities are beginning to wind down, while others continue right through Labor Day. Sailing and tennis lessons end on the 18th, but Tai Chi, yoga, pilates and playgroup continue into September.
Foreign Films at the CCC will present the German film A Woman in Berlin on Friday, August 5 at 7 p.m.
The last lobster roll dinner will be on Wednesday, August 10. Take out or eat in at the CCC between 5 and 6:30 p.m. $17 includes roll, chips and a drink. Remember to pre-order the day before by 1 p.m.
A family night hike with The Trustees of Reservations is scheduled for Thursday, August 11 from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. The summer naturalist program for five- to 10-year-olds continues on Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. Sign up at the CCC.
The Chappaquiddick Music Festival presents the Omega Ensemble performing Arensky and Schubert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 13.
The Chappy Book Club will discuss Wild by Cheryl Strayed on Wednesday, August 24 at the CCC at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.
The weekly farmers’ market/crafts fair on the CCC porch has begun. Stop by on Wednesdays between 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The CCC mixed doubles round robin tennis tournament was played this past weekend. 11 women and 11 men signed up for the tournament. Organizer Laura Pla extends thanks to the Nicholas and Tilghman families for allowing the use of their courts. In the finals Deb Fanton and Brad Daggett beat Paige Daggett and Chris Phinney.
Laura has big plans for next year! She hopes to have a women’s tournament, Friday night social tennis, and Saturday men’s tennis clinic to add to the CCC tennis program. There is a terrific group of tennis folks on Chappy. Visit the CCC website for a complete listing of activities and programs.
Slip Away Farm is halfway through the fifth summer since its founding. The farm stand is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lots of fresh veggies for sale, along with many other delectables Don’t be misled by the sparse look of the fields at the Marshal Farm. They are for the most part resting this year. The main crops are being grown at Wasque Farm and they are looking particularly lush. It’s just harder to see them from the paved road.
The Chappy Store is open for business daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop by the Chappy store before you head into town with your shopping list. You just might save a trip.
The August Chappaquiddick Island Association meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 13 at the CCC. Coffee and pastries are served at 8:30 with the meeting called to order at 9 a.m. In the past the CIA meetings have been scheduled for the first Saturdays in July and August. But in order to avoid the major turnover weekend the meetings were scheduled for one week later this year. Check out the CIA website for loads of useful information.
