The Chappy Community Center will host an end-of-summer potluck on Wednesday, August 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. Please bring a dish for six. Weather and bugs permitting it might be nice to sit outside on the wall or on the lawn so consider bringing a blanket. This is a wonderful opportunity for Chappy folks to say hello and goodbye.
Summer seems to fly by more quickly each year. The sailing and tennis programs at the CCC end on August 18, but other activities are still in full swing. Continuing into the second week of September are TaiChi with Tom Mondays and Fridays 9 to 10 a.m., yoga with Martha Sundays from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., yoga with Amanda Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9:15 a.m., pilates with Toni Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and playgroup for kids 0 to 4 years old Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m.
Foreign film night also continues at the CCC with the Arabic film Theeb on Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. The story focuses on a young Bedouin boy who must survive in the desert during WWI, after the Arab revolt against the ruling Ottomans. The cast is non-professional actors from the Bedouin community in a “Bedouin western” and coming-of-age story. On Sept. 2 Whale Rider from New Zealand will be shown.
It’s never too late to get started on your personal bucket list. If taking fly fishing lessons is among your yearnings then you are in luck! Tune up (or find) your inner casting expert! Abbie Schuster (of the Pamela Way Schusters) will be taking small groups to local fishing spots for coaching and fishing pointers. She has been fishing since childhood and has spent the last six years as a fishing guide in Montana, Alaska and Washington. Lessons are scheduled for Tuesdays 4-5 p.m. and Saturdays 9-10 a.m. and will continue through the derby. Equipment is available if you don’t have your own. Call Abbie directly as location will change with the tide and weather. $25 per lesson includes a $5 donation to the CCC. To sign up please call or email Abbie at 860-944-5225 or Abbie@kismetoutfitters.com.
The Chappy Book Club will discuss Wild by Cheryl Strayed on Wednesday, August 24 at the CCC at 10:30 a.m. This is the memoir of a woman who makes an 1,100 mile hike of discovery in 1995 during which she faces down rattlesnakes and black bears, survives intense heat and record snowfalls, and experiences fully both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. She tells her story with great suspense, sparkling style, warmth and humor. The book was made into a movie a few years back. To quote one review, “Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.” All are welcome.
The perhaps final Farmers’ Market/Crafts Fair on the CCC porch will be on Wednesday August 24 between 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The Chappy Store is open for business daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A stop at the Chappy store before you head into town with your shopping list just might save you a trip.
The Slip Away farm stand is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lots of fresh veggies including cherry tomatoes, eggplant, beets, carrots, cucumbers, scallions, baby lettuce and cabbage for sale along with many other delectables.
I pass along to you Lily Walter’s recent email: “My favorite week of the summer is here: Fair Week! My brother, Christian, and I always get a little carried away with vegetable and flower entries. We sign up for every category possible — this year the number is 17 — and then spend way too long searching for the most perfect, uniform specimen in the field.”
“On Thursday morning we load up the truck with all the entries, bring them to the fairgrounds and carefully arrange them on paper plates, all the while eyeing our competition around us. Then the Ag Hall is closed for judging, and we have to wait many (agonizing) hours to finally count our ribbons later that night. We always have at least a few blues! Keep an eye out for our veggies and flowers up there this year (and Collins’s duck eggs); I think our game is better than ever.”
I’m pretty sure that they will get more than just a few blue ribbons!
