Polly Hill Arboretum has celebrated the completion of a new education center and botany lab.

The new building will provide a year-round classroom facility, including a botany laboratory and herbarium. It was made possible by a $500,000 grant from the Cedar Tree Foundation, gifts from arboretum members and friends, and a $200,000 Massachusetts Cultural Council facilities grant. The Cedar Tree Foundation is the family foundation of the arboretum’s late co-founder, Dr. David Smith.

Polly Hill is a 70-acre non-profit horticultural and botanical center in West Tisbury.

Construction began last fall under the stewardship of primary building contractor Tucker Hubbell of Rising Sun Construction. Margaret Curtin and Peter Rodegast were principal designers.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday, August 19. Arboretum executive director Tim Boland, Mr. Hubbell, and Mr. Smith’s wife, Joan Smith, cut the ribbon with garden loppers.
