Chilmark is slowing down just a bit and the speed and intensity of most activities has slowed just a bit. There is still plenty going on and not many parking places available. The sunsets are just as lovely and the water is warm for swimming so we are far from done with summer, just catching our breath! And, happily, some bonito are being caught. Some of our other summer pleasures are ending. There will be no more lobster rolls to go at the Chilmark Church and the last flea market of the season will be tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 3.
The Chilmark Community Church will welcome guest preacher the Rev. Carol Stine on Sunday, Sept. 4. She is a retired Methodist minister who has recently moved to Martha’s Vineyard.
Lia Kahler and Friends will present a concert with silent auction on Sept. 11 at the Chilmark Community Church. Massachusetts state primary voting will take place at the community center from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8. There are a good number of candidates for these positions; let’s exercise our privilege of voting and support the candidates of our choice.
Mary Anna Eaton entertained Hanni Dzubas of Perth, Canada this month. Hanni was the proprietor of the Kite Works in Vineyard Haven in the 1970s and later owned and operated Hattitudes in the 1990s. Currently she is working on a monograph of her father, the abstract painter Friedel Dzubas. To view his nearly 60-foot long painting, Apocalpsis:Crossing, visit friedeidzubas.org. Mary Anna Eaton also had Navy Commander John Mahoney as her guest. He flew in from Delray Beach for the Chilmark visit. We all send best wishes to Mary Anna who is recovering from back surgery.
There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven for Eileen Sullivan Mayhew. There will be celebration of her life at the Chilmark Community Center at approximately 11:30 a.m. following the service. Eileen was a popular and well-loved Chilmarker for many years. She married Benjamin C. Mayhew Jr., a Chilmark fisherman, in 1941 and they raised their family in Chilmark. For some of those years she supported her husband as he served as a state representative.
Eileen died May 21 after celebrating her 101st birthday with her family and friends. She is much missed by those who knew and remember her.
On Tuesday evening there was a gathering of determined surfers hoping for the waves to come our way from the Atlantic storms currently moving through. The waves were tame but the Squibnocket parking lot was full in the late afternoon and there must have been 20 or so surfers awaiting the perfect wave!
Cheers to all who have friends and family due for the final beautiful weekend of summer.
