We are enjoying the somewhat cooler air. The sky has been that beautiful blue and big fluffy clouds. There has been a breeze and we are almost enjoying the whole day outside. Now we just have to keep track of all the tropical storms brewing in the Atlantic.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Brennen Gerard, who celebrated her day August 27; Rayssa Donato, August 28; Connor Graves, Dani Grow, August 29; Lyle Lemieux, Ruby Mercier, August 30; and to Leiliane Dias, August 31.

Jack and Carol Kane of Rockaway, N.J. and Edgartown have their grandsons Ben and Matt for the week. Jack was inducted into the Hastings on Hudson New York High School Hall of Fame on Sept. 17. He also is a member of three other Halls of Fame sports teams in New Jersey.

It was a disappointment for family, friends and classmates this summer that Jimmy Santos and his wife, Patty, did not make it to the Vineyard to stay as usual with classmate, Pat Tyra. They emailed back and forth often while they were in New York and elsewhere, but it was not the same. And the usual delightful cocktail party for all was postponed until next summer when hopefully they will be back on Island.

Also they missed the three-day visit last week of his cousin Billy Santos and wife, Mary Alice. Billy visited his sister Helen and her husband Dennis Gibson here in Edgartown and Cousin Stuart Santos and his wife Susan up in Oak Bluffs. He also made a surprise 15-minute visit to former classmate and weekend hunting partner, Gordon Tyra, on Shurtleff Way.

Dana Gaines and Herb Foster both won medals in the 25th annual Oar and Paddle Regatta at the little bridge in Oak Bluffs last Sunday, and Pat Tyra paddled in a single kayak for her first time in this event. She reports that it was a wonderful experience for everyone and she hopes to paddle again next year.

Two years ago I had a young man named Scott Carter from England living with me as he worked at the Candy and Ice Cream Bazar for the summer. He was the only male among five young ladies all living in different places — one in Wales, two in Scotland, two in the States. So he was quite happy spending time with all his friends. Some of them also just lived up the street so they could meet up quite easily.

So he has returned for a visit with his “American Mom,” as he calls me as I scold him a lot, to have a reunion with his friends. They are having a blast with their reunion. He leaves the lights on, he leaves dishes in the sink, he is always asking me if I saw one thing or another that he can’t find when it is among his upheaved suitcase, and I love having him here. I can say this as he will not read this till he is on his way back to England and I won’t have to hear him saying I told you so.

With him here he is also became part of the Blodgett family. Mark, Ellen and Ella have had him for “tea” and Ella was so happy to have her friend here, and we have done a lot of visiting, doing Island things and yes we even went up-Island. It has been a busy two weeks and I have done more things with them then I have done all summer.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
