On Sept. 11, mezzo-soprano Lia Kahler will host a concert to benefit Hospitality Homes, the winter homeless shelter initiative that debuted last year at Vineyard churches as well as the Island Food Pantry. The concert takes place at the Chilmark Community Church where Ms. Kahler will perform classical songs and arias, comic songs and piano solos and even two numbers for the musical saw.

Ms. Kahler has long Vineyard ties; her father Albert Littlefield was born and grew up on what is now the Polly Hill Arboretum. Joining her on Sept. 11 will be organist Philip Dietterich and pianist Richard Gordon. Armen Hanjian will play the musical saw.

The event begins with a silent auction and raffle at 2 p.m. The concert begins one hour later.

The Island Food Pantry collects and distributes food to those in need year-round, and the homeless shelter — established by Vineyard clergy last year and staffed by volunteers — provides hot meals and a place for individuals and families to sleep during the coldest months of the year.

The Chilmark Community Church is located at 9 Menemsha Crossroad. The suggested donation is $20, but attendees are encouraged to contribute what they can.
