The 16th annual George V. Tankard Jr. Memorial 5K road race/walk and one mile fun run will take place on East Chop on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The fun run begins at 10:30 a.m. and the 5K road race will start 11 a.m.

The race is a fundraiser for the Martha’s Vineyard branch of the NAACP, the oldest Civil Rights organization on the Island, and supports their scholarship program for local students.

Pre-registration is available from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 and 7 to 10 a.m. at the Summercamp Hotel or online at runreg.com/6460 before Sept. 15. The fee is $15 for pre-registration and $20 on the day of the race. T-shirts are available for the first 100 people to register.

In honor of Abraham Weintraub, who became the world champion for racers 95 years old or older, an award of $50 is given to the oldest person to complete the race. Previous award winners have been Herb Foster and Joe Vera.
