West Tisbury selectmen voted last week to appoint Jeffrey Fisher as the new assistant building inspector.

The town has been advertising for a local inspector to assist building inspector Joe Tierney. Mr. Fisher was the only candidate who was authorized by the state to sit for the required credential tests.

He has lived on the Vineyard since 1971 and has been in the construction business as well as building and cabinet making for the last 35 years. Most recently he worked with Taylor Woodworking in Edgartown.

Selectmen interviewed Mr. Fisher at their August 31 meeting; he said while he is not yet completely familiar with all the building codes and zoning regulations, he is a quick learner.

“I know a lot of this kind of education happens on the job anyway,” he said.

During quick follow up meeting on Sept. 7, selectman Cynthia Mitchell said she enjoyed Mr. Fisher’s interview and had no reservations about moving forward with hiring him. Mr. Fisher was not present at the meeting.

“I think he comes highly recommended from people who I know and trust, I think he would be a good compliment for Joe,” Mrs. Mitchell said.

Board chairman Richard Knabel agreed.

“He comes well recommended and he comes with relevant experience which will serve him well,” Mr. Knabel said.

The two selectmen voted to appoint Mr. Fisher, with a start date as soon as possible.

Selectman Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter 3rd did not attend the meeting.
