The U.S. Coast Guard will hold a public meeting on the Vineyard next week about the proposed removal of navigation buoys in the waters around Martha’s Vineyard.

The proposal to remove 31 buoys and remove sound devices from 10 others was announced late last spring, and met with concern by local mariners.

The Coast Guard said more than 100 comments were received through June 30, when a comment period ended, and several people requested a public meeting to express views.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theater in Vineyard Haven. Coast Guard officials will be on hand.

Another meeting will be held on Sept. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay.

Questions about the meeting can be addressed to Mr. Edward G. LeBlanc at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, Edward.G.LeBlanc@uscg.mil or 401-435-2351.
