Still beautiful days of warmth and sunshine. A little autumn crispness in the air at night but certainly welcome after such a hot and humid summer. Still time to head to the beaches.

Thank you to Frank, Merrily, and Barbara Fenner and their staff at Menemsha Galley who provided for the 29th annual lobster roll luncheon for the Up-Island Council on Aging. The luncheon was started by previous Galley owners Ted and Karin Stanley and has continued with the Fenner family. Thank you to the Rattner family for allowing the luncheon to be held at their waterside property. Nearly 80 elders from across the Vineyard attended with our beloved director Joyce Albertine overseeing it all with assistance from Bethany DeBettencourt Hammond. ‘Til next year.

All the best to BM1 Irving Purington and his family as they head to their homeland in Maine this week after serving at Coast Guard Station Menemsha for the past few years. They will be greatly missed, especially their four handsome young sons. Irv will be stationed closer to his family and will have an opportunity for advancement. Best of luck!

As the summer season comes to an end, thank you to Charles Shipway for another successful sailing program for the youth of Aquinnah who learned to sail on Menemsha Pond. Thank you to Michael Wooley for another successful swimming program for Aquinnah youth who learned to swim at the pool of Hannah Malkin. Thank you to Mrs. Malkin for her many years of allowing the youth to learn to swim at her pool. Charlie and Michael are now teaching the next generation.

Martha’s Vineyard Museum will host a free Derby-themed open house on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Marine Hospital. Tour select rooms in the historic building and learn about plans to renovate the property. A pop-up exhibit on the lawn celebrates One on the Line: The MV Bass and Bluefish Derby, and create Derby arts and crafts including fish printing for all ages. Food and drink will be served, including fish tacos made onsite by Derby fishermen. The event is rain or shine.

On Thursday, Sept. 22, Mark Alan Lovewell presents Fall Equinox Astronomy at the Edgartown Lighthouse at 7:30 p.m. Join amateur astronomer Mark and learn about the night sky as the season turns from summer to fall. Guests are asked to bring a flashlight and beach chair or blanket.

This week at the Aquinnah Public Library: story time is at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday the 17th, and from 11 to 3 the kids’ craft is popsicle sticks apple core. On Tuesday the 19th at 4 p.m. is the After-School Club. A look ahead: on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. the library will be offering henna tattoos again.

Peter Temple would like to remind everyone that on Sept. 19 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Old Town Hall there will be a community dinner and the first of three workshops that will shape housing and zoning policies in Aquinnah. Blanche Jackson of Lighthouse Road had a wonderful belated 90th birthday surprise. The visit was planned in April by Blanche’s daughter Sylvia and granddaughter Adria Tarleton (of Oak Park, Ill.) and she was surprised Sept. 9 at Linda Jean’s during breakfast! Adria walked up and inquired, “How is your food?” and Blanche looked up and burst into tears! Their visit included Adria’s husband, David and their son, Hart. They enjoyed touring the Island, swimming, eating great food and cake, sailing and more. The most enjoyable moments were the delight of just being present with each other. Happy belated 90th birthday Ms. Blanche!

Kristina Leslie would like to invite friends of her late husband Ted Leslie to a memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 17 at sunset on Lobsterville Beach. Family and friends will gather for a remembrance and then head to the Aquinnah town hall for a potluck dinner. Members of Ted’s family have been arriving this week from across the country.
