I think we are all saying “Ahhhh” right now. It is cool, the air conditioners are off, and you can sleep comfortably at night with the windows open. It is a big change from what we are used to. I don’t like air conditioners because I think it makes you feel worse when you go outside, but I broke down and got one when I could not get the sheets off of me one night. Now I have gotten used to the noise so the silence is almost deafening. But this too shall pass; now we need rain.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Once again I need the school list. Anyone want to take bets if I remember it next week. We will see. Anyway, hope you all had a great day.

Fall is coming and as much as some don’t want to hear it the pumpkins are coming in this week. Yes it is time to think Halloween and ghosts and goblins and, yes, how much candy to buy so there is some left for the trick or treaters. But the mums are in also, the asters, cabbages and ornamental peppers.

Chances are you know someone who has fallen or is afraid of falling. A Matter of Balance is a proven program designed to help people manage concerns about falls and to increase their physical activity. The MV Partnership for Health is looking for new volunteer coaches from each town to help provide this program. This free training will be held on two half days — Monday Sept. 19 and Wednesday Sept. 21, from 8 a.m. to noon. Preregistration is required. Training materials and snacks will be provided. For more information, email ksamways@ihimv.org or call 508-627-5797.

The Edgartown library book group, moderated by Jean Stone, is starting up again for a season of good reading and lively discussions this fall and winter. Beginning in September, the group will meet at 4 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. This group is open to all, and the library staff can always help you get a copy of any of the books. The lineup starts on Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. with Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, by Angela Duckworth.

The Derby is going full strength. I still chuckle about how times have changed. There were always great fishermen and women in the Derby, but now it seems there are more and more women and dinner is later and later, even non existing. But I wish you all good luck and keep the lines tight.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
