Welcome autumn, after a long, dry, hot and humid summer. The rains finally came on Monday for most of the day and were greatly needed.
Aquinnah Public Library programs this week: on Saturday the 24th story time is at 10:30 a.m. and from 11 to 3 is kids craft: woven paper fish. Tuesday the 27th the after school club is at 4 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. the book group meets to discuss Sue Miller’s The Arsonist.
At the Aquinnah Cultural Center this week, house tours are from 11 to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday there will be a traditional beadwork demonstration with John Thomas of the Narragansett tribe as he displays his beaded jewelry and demonstrates various techniques used in making different items. Free with admission.
Dr. Sofia Anthony would like to remind everyone that the first Neighborhood Convention meeting of the season will be on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Church in Edgartown. The discussion will be “Feeding the Hungry, One Step at a Time” with Philip Dietterich leading the discussion. All are welcome to attend. Please bring a bag lunch. Beverage and dessert will be served.
Congratulations to Elsie Fantasia and Brian Scott, who were married on Sept. 17 at Menemsha Beach. Elsie is the daughter of Edward and Fawn Vanderhoop Fantasia. Brian is the son of Sally Scott and Herbert Devine Jr.
Congratulations to Michael Mayrand, who was in second place for awhile in the all tackle boat division in the 71st annual MV Bass and Bluefish Derby. Mike’s catch: a 15.38-pound bluefish.
Noah Mayrand has returned to Aquinnah after being on the West Coast for a few years. It was nice to see him recently and learn of his latest adventures.
Derrick Mays and his former college classmate Dawn Marie returned to Washington, D.C. after a Vineyard visit with friends while staying in Oak Bluffs. Derrick and Dawn had an enjoyable afternoon together with Tobias Vanderhoop who often visits with Derrick and his mother Dr. Helen Mays while on his trips to Washington.
Joseph Spinelli and John McKinstry arrived on Tuesday for an end of the season visit with friends. Great to see them but they were so missed over the summer.
Lisa Bibko Vanderhoop will have a display of her artwork at the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank at Beetlebung Corner for the next week. Stop in and view her work. Her 2017 Vineyard Seadogs calendar will also be available.
