The arts have it on Martha’s Vineyard. The upcoming events are no exception. Do you remember dear Marcia Rossi Wise who lived and worked on our Island for so many years? This Renaissance woman gave piano and art lessons to my son as well as to many, many other children. She was the illustrator in Anne Hale’s wonderful book about nature, Moraine to Marsh. Her journey has taken her all over our country, including stints teaching in Florida, Sante Fe, and western Massachusetts. Marcia is pleased to report that she was invited to participate in an exhibit called Distinguishing Features at the Attleboro Art Museum. The opening is on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. If you are off the Rock, stop by to see it. I know we all have good friends in Attleboro.
Yet another talented Marsha! Marsha Winsryg will have the opening of her art show at the West Tisbury Library on Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. Most of her featured work will be landscapes and abstracts, all done in egg tempera. Don’t miss this display.
Our town’s own Anne D. Grandin has learned her painting, Aquinnah, has just been accepted into the All New England Show at the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable. Make plans to stop and enjoy between Oct. 17 and Nov. 13.
Nancy Purnell is displaying her unique hand-painted photos in Manhattan, her go-to place when she’s not living with us here. The show is called New York Icons and the information is not at my fingertips now. I am sure you can find it if you are headed to the Big Apple. I must say that all of these four artists have a fabulous sense of color and style, yet, all different like snowflakes.
You know I wrote last week about my darling young friend and former neighbor, Ashley Willoughby Byrd. This young mother is facing the challenge so many of us have encountered, a cancer diagnosis, and is working on this problem from her new home in San Marcos, Tex. Her favorite brother, Chris Cimeno, (well okay he’s her only brother), wrote a stirring piece on her for a Go Fund Me page.
But I have different news on the Cimeno-Willoughby clan. You know I moan and groan about technology and the confusion it presents for me. On the other hand, I have come to love how it helps bring us all together. When Ashley lived in my neighborhood, her home was a stop off for enjoying Patriots games, among other Massachusetts team sports. Her mom, Tamma, always had a spread of food out that rivaled JB Blau’s. So, for last Sunday’s Patriots game, I was watching from New York; Tamma, Ashley, and let’s hope Ashley’s husband Sam Byrd and son Jude were enjoying it in Texas; Cricket Willoughby, brother Chris Cimeno, and sister Amber Willoughby were cheering on from Massachusetts. And, because of the wonders of the internet, we were all texting each other and commenting on the Patriots’ progress. I truly felt like I was in a room of Cimeno-Willoughbys cheering on our fave team. Well, I do admit I did not have the beautiful, plentiful table of Tamma’s food. I think I ate a few Cheez-Its. And of course, there are our beloved Red Sox. What a great Sunday we had!
Our library is more active than a preschool. The monthly meeting of the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24. New members are always welcome. This meeting is held on the fourth Saturday of every month except for the month of December. September is the annual vote on board members.
The next exciting event at our library starts at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26. Join us for Betty Burton’s lemonade and popcorn, watch the first debate between the Donald and Hillary. Leave the rotten tomatoes at home, although I think it will be very tempting to throw them at the screen in the program room.
May I be sentenced to a stalled car at Five Corners on Labor Day weekend for neglecting to inform you of Trip Barnes’ birthday on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Trippy, please forgive me.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Judy Federowicz on Sept. 24; Sept. 25 is a party for my nephew and godson, Daniel Gardella, delightful twins Pedro Carvalho and Penha Prata, Lindsay Gonsalves, Chris Chappell and John James Chadwick; Sept. 26 is shared by Jillian Guest and Calla Gillies; Sept. 27 shines on Jason Lew and Stephen Serusa; Sept. 28 shines on Pat Gardella; and on Sept. 29 Karen George takes the cake. Many happy returns.
