Wind, rain, and sun has been the story of the week. We had all watched Matthew come up the coast and were relieved that the hurricane was not coming our way, however, we did get some rain and wind. But the whole weekend was not a washout as Monday was a beautiful day. Still some wind but it was great to be outside. Now we are starting to prepare for the cold and keep a watch on the chances of frost.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. I know I still have not got the list for the birthdays but they are on their way.

I love to report weddings as they are such joyous occasions. This one is one of those, however, that makes me feel old as this young lady was one of my favorite little girls who would come into the A&P when I worked there many moons ago. I worked in the deli and I always gave a slice of bologna or cheese to kids in shopping carts that were waiting patiently for their mother to finish shopping. This young lady always looked for that bologna and she had a big smile and was so good.

So congratulations to Mary Bergeron and John Parker who were joined in marriage on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Ag Hall. What a beautiful bride she was and she has a very handsome husband. Social media gave those of us who did not attend the wedding an opportunity to see the happy couple and their celebration. Here is too many happy and healthy years together.

The Federated Church is having a potluck dinner on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at their Parish House on 45 South Summer street. This is a free event, open to anyone who would like to bring a dish to share. Please bring a non-perishable food product for the food pantry. To sign up call 508-627-4421, email admin@federatedchurchmv.org, or stop by the Parish House during the week between 9 a.m. and noon, or on Sunday mornings. For more information visit federatedchurchmv.org. Last week I enjoyed the company of my cousins Sonny and Cindy Laurent. They traveled up from Plaquemine, La. to visit family up north. It has been five years since they were here last. Sonny is now retired and they can travel a little more. They lived here on the Island for a long time and Sonny worked at Al’s package store for many years.

So while they were here, for four short days, they got in as many visits as they could to their friends and of course some of the Island cuisines. Josh Kresel was on vacation and he supplied us with some bass that he had caught that day, and the next day, fresh scallops. Then Floyd Norton caught some bluefish which we got to enjoy. Sonny loves his apple fritters and got one every morning and got some to take back to Somerset where they went next to visit Cindy’s brother and sisters. It was a great visit but a very fast one. Hopefully they will be back again soon.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
